Typical scenario

Two soil reports give different values

If two laboratories report different results, choosing the preferred report without checking comparability is inappropriate. Suppose both concern one plot, but describe sampling locations, depths and preparation differently.

What needs to be clarified

Check comparability for specific parameters and distinguish differences in examined material from differences in methods or data presentation.

Materials to prepare

  • Both complete reports, including methods, units and notes.
  • Sampling records and a plan identifying the corresponding samples.
  • Information on transfer, preparation and known storage conditions.

What to compare

  • Connect every value to its sample and sampling location.
  • Compare parameters, units, methods and stated result limitations.
  • Check whether the documents concern comparable soil layers and conditions.

Possible outcome of the analysis

An opinion may explain comparable and non-comparable entries, missing information and the need for agreed additional examination.

Limits of the conclusions

Different values alone prove neither laboratory error nor contamination of the whole plot; further testing and sampling require separate agreement.
