Typical scenario

Slow infiltration in wheel tracks

Standing water after machinery passes may be attributed to compaction. Nearby points can differ in moisture, vegetation and crusting. Use replicated sites and record initial conditions under a common infiltration procedure.

What needs to be clarified

Compare track and matched-control infiltration rates, variation and measured differences separately from proposed mechanisms.

Materials to prepare

  • Track and control map with surface photographs
  • Moisture, vegetation and recent-rain log
  • Ring-test dimensions, water volumes and timings

What to compare

Use the same ring procedure at replicated points, checking installation, water volume and timing. Distinguish prewetting and repeat applications. Compare interval rates and variation, noting cracks, wall leakage and initial-moisture differences.

Possible outcome of the analysis

A field report may plot infiltration, compare sites, explain excluded runs and propose density or structure measurements to examine compaction.

Limits of the conclusions

A ring test establishes no unique ponding cause and is not a whole-site drainage assessment. Test conditions and lateral flow constrain extrapolation.
